Are you a registered nurse, other health care professional, or a lay person with an interest in promoting health, wellness, and spirituality, coordinating volunteers, or starting a visitation ministry in your parish or congregation? If so, consider becoming a volunteer parish nurse or health minister.
The Pittsburgh Mercy Health System Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program is sponsoring a four-day basic preparation course for those interested in becoming parish nurses or health ministers.
Parish nursing is internationally recognized as a specialty nursing practice that combines professional nursing and health ministry. The practice of parish nursing emphasizes health and healing within the faith community as well as the community-at-large. Parish nursing embraces four major concepts: the spiritual dimension, professionalism, wholistic health, and community. Parish nurses and health ministers provide prevention and wellness education and assist parishioners in accessing health care resources in their communities.
The next four-day Parish Nurse Preparation Course will be held Feb, 17, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Feb. 18, 2012, from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.; March 16, 2012, from 8:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and March 17, 2012, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The course follows the International Parish Nurse Resource Center's recently revised curriculum. Modules include history and philosophy of parish nursing; prayer; self care; healing and wholeness; assessment; health promotion; ethical issues; documenting practice; legal aspects; communication and collaboration; family violence; grief and loss; advocacy; care coordination; and beginning your ministry. All modules are taught by parish nurse educators and other health care professionals who are considered subject matter experts in their respective fields of practice.
The cost is $395 per person. Limited scholarship funds are available. Class size is limited to 20 participants.
The registration deadline for this session is Friday, Feb. 10, 2012.
Thirty continuing education credits will be provided to registered nurses who attend the four-day session.*
