Surgery Department
Welcome to the
UPMC Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh's web-site for the
general surgery residency.
Constructed by seven Mercy nuns in 1847 as their
original flagship hospital, UPMC Mercy is Pittsburgh's
first permanent hospital and has been training nurses
and residents for almost 150 years.
Our department's goal is to provide an outstanding
educational experience for our surgical residents.
Surgical volume has always been excellent, with
our chief residents' case volume regularly exceeding
the 90% nationally. The variety of cases is also
excellent. We offer a strong core experience in
both ambulatory and in-patient surgery. Also, our
busy cardiovascular service, Burn Unit, and designation
as a Level I Trauma Center ensures a diverse case
mix. Mercy also has an operating room designed for
advanced endovascular
surgery, a state of the art
endoscopy
simulator, and on campus facilities for resident
training in microvascular
surgery and virtual laparoscopy.
UPMC
Mercy has long been known for providing a hospitable
and nurturing environment, and camaraderie between
the residents and attending staff is excellent.
Residents in our program must work well with each
other and are expected to contribute at conferences
and participate in the education of clerkship students
from Jefferson Medical College and the Lake Erie
College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Our graduates are comfortable entering private practice,
but many pursue fellowship opportunities. Recent
alumni have entered fellowships in cardiothoracic
surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, surgical
oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgey, and
gastrointestinal surgery at institutions including
Stanford University, the National Institute of Health,
the John Wayne Cancer Institute, Roswell Park, Indiana
University, the University of Massachusetts, the
Lahey Clinc, and Emory University.
