Hospital of Pittsburgh. Established in 1847, Mercy Hospital was Pittsburgh's first hospital as well as the
first hospital west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first Mercy Hospital anywhere in the world.
Mercy has been a teaching hospital almost from its beginning. The first intern, Dr. Thomas
W. Shaw, began his training at Mercy in 1848. Today, UPMC Mercy Hospital is a major independent academic
medical center.
Mercy sponsors residency programs in Anesthesiology,
Diagnostic Radiology,
Family
Medicine, General Surgery,
Internal Medicine,
Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, Podiatry, and
Transitional Year and participates in the
jointly-sponsored program in Emergency Medicine.
